Typical costs of porting and related procedures...
The following is intended as a rough guide only towards what typical expenses you might incur to utilize my modification services. It is targeted at saving you and I both time and repeated explanations. ALL projects get a careful estimate quotation upon their receipt here at the shop location. It is determined by measurement, parts analysis, condition, your targets and goals and any specific options that might apply or be of interest to you. Estimates are firm and binding and do not change unless unforeseen issues arise during the execution of the project (or if it is an "open" research effort). When this rarity does occur, all work is stopped, the customer is contacted, and a full explanation of what was found and possible solutions/cost is given in detail. NO FURTHER WORK is performed without full customer approval and understanding... PERIOD! The result is an honest, "no surprises" working relationship with each and every customer individually.
This is a general outline only for the more popular services I routinely offer. There are many things I offer that will not be listed here. Please e-mail me or call (207) 221-0765 for any questions that remain unanswered by this summary overview. My shop labor rate is $85 per hour.
Lastly, I am a one person business that performs substantially one off, custom performance projects. This is intentional to promote control and quality, as well as to limit project involvement to those I select and am interested in being connected with. This structuring severely limits volume and is considered by me a fair price to pay for guaranteeing quality without compromise. It also means that I am rarely the cheapest or give the quickest turnaround times. So be it... I have no intention of being WalMart and therefore do not fit everybody's needs. Perhaps I fit yours?
Harley Davidson head modifications...
- Twin Cam, Evolution, Shovelhead porting packages:
from $720 labor per pair (Iron Head XL's $860 labor) and up (all parts extra...)
...includes decarbonization, measurement/analysis/estimate prep, guide replacement/modification for high lift cams and improved flow profile, before/after flow measurement and file creation, full porting and chamber modification, intake manifold porting and matching to head sets, valve seat recutting with high flow profiles biased to achieve desired air flow curve emphasis, combustion chamber volume equalization, exact current compression ratio calculation with components and deck height in use, calculation of machining requirements for new compression ratio target, valve overlap clearancing, cleaning of head assemblies, valve train/spring set-up, lubrication and head assembly giving you heads to "bolt on" (after verifying valve to piston clearance).
- Twin Cam, Evolution head gasket surface milling:
$90 labor per pair for set-up and milling up to .050" (additional removal at labor rate)
...includes chamfering of sharp edges and cc'ing for volume verification.
- Twin Cam, Evolution, Shovelhead, Iron Head and Pan head dual spark plug machining:
$180 labor per pair for set-up, precise 2nd spark plug location for optimum detonation resistance, any spark plug thread size desired (optional solid steel thread inserts/custom thickness aluminum plug spacers).

- Shovelhead, Iron Head and Pan head gasket surface milling:
$120 labor per pair for set-up, milling up to .050" (additional removal at labor rate), re-machining cylinder spigot counterbore and counterboring each head bolt hole.

- Cylinder head alteration and machining, per combustion chamber:
usually from $60 to $180 labor
...services available include decarbonization, measurement/analysis/estimate prep, baseline exact current compression/squish band measurement (with deck height in use or planned for use), consideration of compression/squish velocity targets needed for goals, exhaust system characteristics and file creation, custom head dimensional planning to compliment other engine modifications and fuel to be used. Complete and precise machining alterations available to head gasket surface, squish band width/angle/recess and radius into pocket as well as custom pocket radius formation. Final combustion chamber volume is held to .1 cc.

- Exhaust system measurement and planning:

...services available include current system measurement/analysis, porting/compression/squish band analysis and compatability, establishment of targets needed for goals and file creation. Complete engine simulation and custom matched exhaust system dimensional blueprint service is available. Please note that this is for a dimensional design blueprint ONLY, NOT fabrication of the actual design! Actual fabrication of custom exhaust systems is done on a very limited, appointment only basis and requires an engine shell and chassis on site here for fitment and building.
