Mt. "Deserted" Island
Mt. Desert Island
April 14 - 17, 2006

We often refer to the warming weeks before Memorial Day as the "tourist season for the locals". Its the time when we get to enjoy the beauty of our home state at our own pace; a time when the views of Mt Desert Island are more of its natural beauty, and not so much of the latest trends in cars. Less-than-optimum weather clinched it this year: we had the island to ourselves!

Flooded brook.

We had web access from our hotel room, and downloaded images of the park before taking to the trails on Sunday. We were using Google Earth, and I was fascinated by how well it could duplicate our view from the balcony of the nearby Bar and Porcupine Islands. It was when I panned the view North that I noticed this peculiar low-resolution "smear" extending out into the water: it's the pier for the ferry to Nova Scotia; "The Cat"! The low-resolution imagery is much more useful in showing larger and more distant features, and produced a view from Flying Mountain that brought back memories of earlier visits to the Island.
